31 days of Self Care – Day 11

Day 11 (Exploring) Today I stopped everything and participated in the 31 days of Self Care Salon – a conference call dedicated to the exploration of Take Time for Your Life by Cheryl Richardson.  I read it five years ago in the VTP, but I haven’t been practicing it. Stacy Brice facilitated the conference call of 50 people, and we began the journey to study TTFYL under her guidance and share our individual perspectives. It was both motivating and inspiring to learn that so many people struggle with the concept of putting yourself at the top of the list. It sounds selfish, excluding those around you in order to be you, but there’s a lot of sense to it. Cheryl explains it by stating, “When you practice extreme self-care and put yourself first, you are then fully available to others without resentment or anger.”

The first step for me, and one Cheryl recommends in her book, is to look at how I spend my time. Using a circle with each part of my life defined as a segment (a pie chart), are the segments equal and balanced? Am I living a balanced, “Whole” Life? Or am I spending more time “contributing to others in some way than I spend on my spiritual well-being or having fun?” Does the relationship segment include more time working on troubled relationships or caring for others than time sharing and developing relationships that offer nurturing and enjoyment? How will  I evenly distribute my time and energy among the segments of my life?
